Key takeaways
  • Your Google Business Profile drives the map results that appear before any website.
  • Publish your menu as text on a web page, not only as a PDF or photo.
  • Reviews, replies and Restaurant structured data are what move you up locally.

"Restaurant grand baie", "best seafood flic en flac", "where to eat in port louis": people choose where to eat on their phone, often a few minutes before they go. For restaurants, cafés and bars in Mauritius, SEO is mostly about being in the map results, having a menu Google can read, and good reviews.

1. Your Google Business Profile comes first

For "near me" and "restaurant + town" searches, Google shows a map with three restaurants before any website. To appear there:

  • Claim and verify your profile, choose the most precise category (Seafood restaurant, Indian restaurant, not just Restaurant).
  • Keep opening hours exact, including public holidays.
  • Add recent photos of dishes, the room and the view, every month.
  • Add your menu, your booking link and your website.
  • Answer every review, in the language it was written in.

2. Put your menu on your website, as text

Many Mauritian restaurants publish their menu as a PDF or a photo. Google and AI assistants read those poorly. Put the menu on a web page as text, with dish names, short descriptions and prices. That page will start ranking for dish searches (octopus curry grand baie, vegan restaurant quatre bornes).

3. Fix the basics on your website

In our study of 70 Mauritian websites, 30% had no H1 heading, 21% no meta description and 77% had images without alt text. For a restaurant, the fix is simple: a title like "Seafood restaurant in Grand Baie | Your Name", an H1 that says the same, and photos described in words.

4. Add Restaurant structured data and an FAQ

Mark your website up with Restaurant structured data: cuisine, address, opening hours, price range, menu link and booking link. Then add an FAQ: Do you take bookings? Is there parking? Vegetarian options? Can you host groups? In our study, the two restaurant websites that used Restaurant structured data scored 90 and 100 out of 100 for AI readiness, among the highest in the sample.

5. Reviews are your rankings

The number, recency and quality of Google reviews strongly affect the map results. Ask at the end of a good meal, put a QR code on the bill folder, and reply to every review. Never buy reviews: Google removes them and can penalise the profile.

6. Keep an eye on the restaurants around you

Track a handful of searches such as restaurant + your town, your cuisine + your town and your own name in a CrazyDodo project, with the 3 restaurants you compete with most. You'll see each week who appears first and whether your changes work.
